(en) An intimate, picaresque inquiry into French life as lived by the country's poor and its provident, as well as by the film's own director, Agnes Varda. The aesthetic, political and moral point of departure for Varda are gleaners, those individuals who pick at already-reaped fields for the odd potato, the leftover turnip.

(sk) Známa francúzska filmárka Agnes Varda koncom roku 1999 a začiatkom roku 2000 cestovala s digitálnou kamerou a malým štábom po celom Francúzsku, aby zachytila rôzne podoby zberačstva (snímala vidiečanov na poliach, vo viniciach či sadoch, bezdomovcov v okolí tržníc a kontajnerov, ale i umelcov, ktorí využívajú vyhodené predmety na vlastnú tvorbu). Zachytávaním týchto obrazov sa i ona sama stáva zberačkou. Film získal Európsku filmovú cenu za najlepší dokument a mnoho ďalších ocenení.

(fr) Agnes Varda rencontre différentes personnes; jeunes, moins jeunes, agriculteurs, RMIstes, salariés, retraités, en ville ou a la campagne, qui vont glaner dans les champs ou grappiller dans les arbres apres les récoltes, ramasser les légumes ou fruits hors calibre jetés par les entreprises vendant les fruits et légumes, récupérer de la nourriture dans les poubelles des supermarchés, boulangeries ou a la fin des marchés. Le film montre aussi les personnes récupérant des objets dans les poubelles ou dans les rues lors de la collecte des déchets encombrants. Ces objets sont réparés, réutilisés par ces personnes dans leur vie quotidienne ou par des artistes pour leurs ouvres d'arts. Ces "glaneurs", comme les nomme Agnes Varda en référence a Des glaneuses de Jean-François Millet, sont proche des mouvements Freegan. Un film agréable a regarder et a recommander.

Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government with messages like "Stay Asleep", "No Imagination", "Submit to Authority". Even scarier is that he is able to see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued.

(en) Just after midnight on Good Friday 1989, the giant supertanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound to create one of the biggest man-made ecological disasters of the 20th century. Eleven million gallons of crude oil gushed from the stricken tanker into the pristine waters of the Sound, killing whales, millions of fish and birds, and thousands of sea otters. The spill had a catastrophic effect on local communities, wiping out their herring fishery and severely depleting the Alaskan salmon industry for years to come.

Twenty years on, this programme retraces the catalogue of errors that led to the disaster and investigates the legacy of the spill and the lasting environmental damage to Prince Wiliam Sound, featuring interviews with crew members aboard the supertanker on the fateful night, with the Exxon executives and Alaskan politicians in the eye of the storm and with the local fishermen and activists who had prophetically warned of disaster and now lead the fight for justice.

The Vietnam War had the nation divided, and several youth leaders -- including Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman and other activists/dirty goddamn hippies (depending on which side of the argument you were on) -- organized public protests against the war, against capitalism, against what they saw as America's failings. 8 of the leaders -- some of whom, like Hoffman and Rubin, were central organizers, and some of whom, like Black Panther Bobby Seale, were not -- were charged with inciting to riot and brought to trial in Chicago. The film incorporates you-are-there newsreel and found footage; more strikingly -- and, bluntly, less successfully -- it also uses motion-capture based computer generated animation to recreate scenes from the trial, with various name actors recreating court testimony.

(sk) V roku 1968, Národná demokratická konvencia v Chikágu bola sužovaná protestmi v uliciach. Vojna vo Vietname rozdelila národ a niekoľkých vodcov mládeže -- vrátane Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman a ďalších aktivistov/špinavých prekliatych hipíkov (záleží, na ktorej strane argumentovania ste boli) -- organizovali verejné protesty proti vojne, proti kapitalizmu, proti tomu čo videli ako zlyhanie Ameriky. (sk) Je to priam neuveriteľné a mnohí hovoria o malom filmovom zázraku. Magický filmový príbeh so skromným rozpočtom sa pevne usadil v prvej desiatke doteraz najnavštevovanejších filmov tohto roku a hoci od jeho premiéry už uplynulo niekoľko týždňov, distribútori neustále zvyšujú počet kópií v amerických kinách. Dojímavý príbeh o priateľstve 10-ročného dievčatka a stáda veľrýb mnohí považujú za najväčšie filmové prekvapenie tohto roka. Ale tí, ktorí sledovali vznik tohto filmu, tvrdia, že o jeho úspechu boli presvedčení už od začiatku. Za dobrodružným príbehom, ktorý renomovaný časopis Variety nazval "magickým príbehom, ktorý dojme každého diváka bez rozdielu veku", stojí totiž Tim Sanders, skúsený producent fantasy trilógie Pán prsteňov.

Ústrednou postavou príbehu je Koro a jeho vnučka Pai. Koro mal odjakživa v malej komunite domorodých obyvateľov na Novom Zélande veľkú úctu a vážnosť. Narodil sa totiž s magickou schopnosťou rozumieť veľrybám. Ostrovania ho považujú za svojho najvýznamnejšieho obyvateľa, pretože práve s ním (a jeho schopnosťou) spájajú svoju identitu. Nadišiel však čas, aby Koro odovzdal svoje umenie a schopnosti mladšiemu nástupcovi. Prichádzajú mladí muži z celého ostrova, aby podstúpili skúšky, ktoré majú preveriť ich schopnosť načúvať veľrybám. Z nich má vzísť nový pán veľrýb...

(en) The cycling phenomenon known as Critical Mass is a reclamation of public space that started in San Francisco in the early 1990s and spread by the internet throughout the world. On a set day, at the end of every month, cyclists and other self-propelled people ride en masse through city streets.

Vancouver has become renowned for its big Critical Mass bike rides, and particularly the party spirit that attracts all types of cyclists.

You Never Bike Alone charts the development of these mass rides in Vancouver over the last decade, from the (pre-Critical Mass) protest rides across the historic Lions Gate Bridge in the early to mid-Nineties, through the "No Fun City" years of the late 1990s and early 2000s, where cyclists were routinely arrested for riding together, up to giant Critical Mass rides of more recent years.

Along the way, You Never Bike Alone strips down for the Wholesome Undie (an underwear ride protesting the Molson Indy race) and throws caution to the wind for the World Naked Bike Ride, a ride founded in Vancouver by a Critical Mass regular.

(cz) Po několikaměsíční práci jsem dokončil svůj premiérový dokument o pražské iniciativě Food Not Bombs. Během pár dní bude volně ke stažení, nejspíše na stránkách CSAF.cz. Přímý odkaz na download zde ještě uvedu. Kvůli českému právnímu řádu, který vůbec neumožňuje zveřejnit dílo bez autorských práv, je film šířen pod licencí Creative Commons.

Dokument má bezmála půlhodiny a jeho snahou je přiblížit aktivitu Food Not Bombs, především skrz názory jejích členů a členek. Ukázal pohledy lidí, kteří vybírají vyhozené jídlo z kontejnerů u supermarketů ne proto, že by měli sami hlad, ale proto, aby z něj mohli uvařit teplé jídlo pro ty, kteří si uvařit nemají kde.

Film se iniciativu Food Not Bombs nesnaží idealizovat; snaží se o vyvážený přístup, o pohled do zákulisí a ukázaní činnosti Food Not Bombs v plné nahotě, včetně nenaplněných očekávání, zklamání a překážek.

(en) White Terror is the concluding documentary in Daniel Schweitzer’s trilogy on radical rightwing extremists. Adopting the position of a neutral observer, Schweitzer was able to film neo–Nazi sympathisers and leaders alike, who let him attend their ‘private parties’ and visit facilities where they produce their ‘home videos’. He gets an audience with the biggest Swedish producer of propaganda videos, which juxtapose footage of the Holocaust with concerts of skinhead groups performing songs with racist lyrics. Though this may appear to be a concession on the part of the director, it is in fact an effective strategy allowing him to get close to these egocentric fanatics convinced of their own truth. Critical input is supplied through interviews with journalists from various parts of the world who specialise in long–term investigations of the activities of rightwing extremists. With his skeletal film crew, he visits three main neo–Nazi strongholds: Stockholm, the centre of propaganda production; Dallas, characterised by its surprising ‘family atmosphere’ where ‘white race’ advocates meet during Sunday barbeques; and Moscow, where neo–Nazis recruited from street gangs and the ranks of ex–soldiers get together under the pretext of Slavic nationalism. Schweitzer sounds a warning that ‘our local Nazis’ constitute an organised subculture with international links and numerous sympathisers and that unless we take the danger of their ideas and actions seriously, they may become reality.

However, while the early punk scene appropriated anarchist imagery mainly for its shock value, the band Crass expounded serious anarchist and pacifist ideas, and went on to become a notable influence in the burgeoning Anarcho-Punk movement. Many anarcho-punks are supporters of issues such as animal rights, feminism, the anti-war movement, the antiglobalization movement, and many other social movements.
