(en) Animal Equality activists have rescued five hens from a farm containing 160,000 animals on Monday 16 September.

After entering one of the sheds via an unlocked door and without having to use any type of force, the activists removed five hens, who were later examined by a vet. One of them had to be operated on to remove a huge mass from her head resulting from an old eye infection. Another hen is currently receiving veterinary treatment but is out of danger.

These animals were being subjected to a process called a forced molt, in which through severe food restriction - including going for days without eating - and in total darkness, their bodies are shocked into a new cycle of egg-laying.

These one-and-a-half-year-old animals have spent the last eleven months trapped behind bars without being able to see the sun. They are suffering from various nutritional deficiencies and some of them also have liver damage due to the high protein content of their food which is given in order to increase the weight of their eggs.

The Animal Equality Open Rescue Team has recorded these images because we believe it is essential that society has access to what happens inside places like these so they have the ability to think about how the animals must feel.

This rescue was carried out on a farm with battery cages similar to the 'enriched cages' which will obligatory from 2012 onwards throughout the European Union. Nevertheless, on 'free-range' farms, hens are still deprived of their freedom and used as mere resources for human benefit, and finally all of them are sent to the slaughterhouse at a fraction of their natural lifespan.

In Spain, more than 47 million hens are victims of this system which exists to satisfy the demand for eggs. Eggs that we do not even need. In the UK the figure is 32 million. The same number of male chicks - their brothers - are also victims of this consumption. Often forgotten they do not even register in official statistics. On every type of farm, male chicks are killed, either ground up alive or gassed, because they do not lay eggs and they are not profitable for any other purpose.

Animal Equality rescues animals not only to help these particular individuals, but also to get society to reflect and stop seeing the other animals with which we share the planet as being at our disposal, as resources we can make a profit from.

As in all open rescues we carry out, we always come away filled with a sensation of sadness and impotence when we have to close the door and leave behind the thousands of other animals who will suffer their whole lives only to end up with their throats slit in a slaughterhouse.

We are simply unable to rescue all the animals on farms, in slaughterhouses, or laboratories. Ending this ongoing animal holocaust depends on each one of us, it depends on removing our financial support from all of it, in all its forms.

Living as vegans means we free those animals who were going to be forced to suffer and die for our demands, and builds a base of support for a world that is more equal for all, regardless of the species we belong to.

Les aficionados les plus engagés, quittent le pays pour continuer a vivre leur passion. Parmi eux, la mythique "Spiral Tribe" commence a sillonner l’Europe. A partir de son modele, des groupes se forment en France, République Tcheque, Italie (autres pays) et créent un nouveau moyen d’expression. La "Free Party", une fete libre, illégale, alternative, qui réunit un public marginal et libertaire.

En France, les fetes libres sont inconnues du grand public. Quelques centaines, voire un ou deux milliers de participants profitent de ces zones d’autonomie temporaires (cf. Hakim Bey, TAZ / Zone Autonome Temporaire) importées par les travellers anglais. Dans le meme temps, l’Etat français, suivant le modele anglais, réprime les soirées techno légales, et pousse les "raveurs" a la clandestinité. Beaucoup d’entre eux viennent gonfler les rangs du tout nouveau mouvement des "Free Parties". Quelques années apres l’arrivée des anglais, un collectif français fait ses premieres armes. Les "Heretik" se définissent comme "ne souscrivant pas a la doctrine établie".

«Pendant quelques années, on a multiplié les free. Musique, drogue, accidents, prison, activisme et succes rapide. A la fin des années 90, a la place du credo "pour vivre heureux vivons cachés", on décide de développer une stratégie de coup d’éclat pour revendiquer le droit a la fete libre. Des "attentats sonores", des fetes illégales qui réunissent des milliers de personnes jusqu’au cour de la capitale.»

Le film retrace sans tabous plus de 10 ans d’activisme de cette tribu moderne, qui mene des premieres fetes clandestines jusqu’aux temples de la société du spectacle. (en) In the beginning of the 90's, Margaret Thatcher's Criminal Justice Bill bans rave parties in England. The most committed supporters and followers of the scene, organised in modern tribes, leave the country to continue to live their passion and create a new alternative and libertarian means of expression. These are the free parties that are parties free of any restrictions and are based on personal freedom and responsibility.
Inspired by this way of life, new collectives form in France, the Czech Republic, Italy and other countries. Among them French, "Heretik System" becomes one of the symbols of the free party movement by focusing on excess and provocation. Meanwhile, following the English model, the French government suppresses the legal techno parties and pushes ravers underground.
Using the name "Heretik" coming from "Heretic" defined as "not conforming to established beliefs" the collective organises a sequence of free parties over several years. The group consists of many with strong personalities. During the first years of existence of the collective their way of life is close to that of punk and DIY. Music, drugs, accidents and prison mixes with virulent activism and quick success. With time the Heretiks change their strategy pattern to achieve remarkable feats rather than sticking to their previous philosophy of living hidden in order to live happily. To claim for the right to party freely they organise "sound attacks" - illegal parties for thousands of people reaching even to the very heart of the capital city (such as the Molitor swimming pool that lays in the 16th arrondissement of Paris).
The film reviews 10 years of existence of this urban tribe, revealing the history of the Heretik system from their underground beginnings to their triumph on top of the entertainment business.

(cz) V první polovině 90. let vydala vláda Margaret Thatcherové Criminal Justice Act, který zakázal pořádání rave parties ve Velké Británii. Lidé pohybující se v této "nomádské" subkultuře tak museli hledat jiné cesty pro svoji seberealizaci. Ti nejzapálenější příznivci této scény odešli do zahraničí, aby mohli ve svém způsobu života pokračovat.
Nové komunity začaly vznikat ve Francii, Itálii, Česku a dalších zemích. Mezi ně patří i "Heretik System" z Francie, který se stal symbolem tohoto hnutí. Mezitím ovšem francouzská vláda následovala tu britskou a legální free techno parties byly také postaveny mimo zákon.
Soundsystem Heretik organizoval nejrůznější party po dobu několika let. V průběhu prvních let existence fungovali na principech punku a DIY a muzika, drogy, nehody a vězení se mísily s nakažlivým aktivismem a rychlým úspěchem. Postupem času Heretik změnil strategii a zaměřil se raději na masivní úspěch mésto lpění na původních ideálech.
Dokument We Had a Dream rekapituluje deset let existence tohoto soundsystemu, od jeho undergroundových počátků až po cestu na vrchol zábavního průmyslu.

Koji Wakamatsu, Japan’s most controversial filmmaker, brilliantly reconstructs the most troubling episode in the bloody history of Japanese student-radical extremism through the true story of the United Red Army faction, which had its roots in the 60’s when Japanese students protested America using Japan as a staging base for its war in Vietnam.

In 1972, 14 members of the United Red Army faction lynched each other during group “self-criticism” sessions while training in the mountains and the survivors holed up at the Asama Sanso Mountain Lodge,

which quickly degenerated into a ten-day stand-off with the police that is one of the pivotal moments in Japanese history, as famous in Japan as Martin Luther King’s assassination is in America.

Wakamatsu’s film is an earnest attempt to process the shock that the Japanese left was experiencing at the time and to grasp the motivation of the militant students.

A gut-wrenching docudrama underlaid with electrifying psychedelic rock music by Sonic Youth founder member Jim O’Rourke.

(cz) Příběh o událostech okolo japonské Sjednocené rudé armády, jenž vznikla v červenci r. 71 sloučením Frakce rudé armády a Revoluční rudé frakce (zasvěcení vědí, jak obrovské množství podobných organizací na přelomu 60. a 70. let existovalo, viz stále omílaná kapitola kolem Badera a Meinhofové, italské Rudé brigády a mnoho dalších). Wakamatsu problematiku dokonale zná, stejně jako zná osobně mnoho zúčastněných (jeho politická orientace je dostatečně známa), a zuřivě tepe do vlastních řad.

Ludis Rodriguez, is a spunky Kankuamo widow who is framed and captured on false charges of rebellion. Flor Ilva Trochez, is the first female Nasa governor of Jambaló, who leads a pacific movement to dismantle police barracks that endanger civilians by placing them in the line of fire.

Even though We Women Warriors bears witness to human rights abuses; the film gives a voice to these women who never lose hope, courage or faith. Despite her life being threatened after denouncing a massacre in her village, Doris does not abandon her tribal post. Once Ludis is freed she is able to move onward with her family, coping and healing after systematic violence swept through her region. Flor and her people put Colombia's constitutional indigenous autonomy into practice and strive to create a territory free of armed fighters.

In their recent report, "Sweet Words, Air of Life", the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) notes that all 102 distinct Indigenous Peoples in Colombia "are at risk of disappearing" because of the ongoing conflict between Colombia's armed forces and paramilitary groups like the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC).

32 of these people are a particular concern, says ONIC, "due to the fact that they have a population of less than 500 people, the majority concentrated in the regions of Amazonía and Orinoquía. Of these 32 peoples, 18 have a population of less than 200 people, and 10 are composed of less than 100 individuals."

Within this context, on January 26, 2009, the Constitutional Court of Colombia issued a Decree on behalf of the indigenous peoples, in which it was concluded that the indigenous peoples "are in danger of becoming physically and culturally extinct." The decree ordered the national government to implement a Program that guarantees the Human Rights for all the Indigenous Peoples.

To date, the government has failed to create such a program.

Last night, March 1, at least 78 immigrants hunger strikers were in hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki. The medical team responsible to support the hunger strikers decided the transfer to the hospitals because the hunger strikers were suffering from:
a) imminent acute renal failure (that is reversible if treated promptly),
b) severe dehydration with electrolyte deficiencies,
c) cardiac arrhythmias,
d) several other medical problems.
In several hospitals police “visited” the doctors and asked the Ids and data about the medical condition of the hunger strikers. When doctors refused to give any information about their patients, police have written down the names of the doctors. Na blokádě nebude k dispozici žádná pořadatelská služba, protože se jedná o takový druh akce, který by šel nejlépe popsat slovy „občanská neposlušnost". Domluvte se proto se svými přáteli a doražte společně v malých či větších skupinách. Promluvte si dopředu o způsobu, jakým chcete demonstraci neonacistů blokovat a do jaké míry jste ochotni nerespektovat příkaz policie k vyklizení prostoru. Rozdíl taktik není překážkou jednoty v cíli: neumožnit neonacistům hlásat a praktikovat nenávist. Blokáda v sedě, živý řetěz nebo barikáda se navzájem nevylučují, ale podporují. Držme se pouze jednoho pravidla: nekritizujme akce jiných antifašistických skupin, ať už je jejich taktika jakákoliv. Zůstaňme jednotní.

(en) Nigeria’s military government attracted international condemnation for its oppression of the Ogoni people of the Niger Delta. Ogoni villages were destroyed, their inhabitants indiscriminately killed and Ogoni leader and writer Ken Saro-Wiwa held in prison for over a year on a dubious murder charge and then executed.

The award-winning ‘Delta Force,’ take us back sixteen years, to when the people of the Niger Delta, exploited for oil for over 30 years, finally said enough was enough. (sk) Nigérijská vojenská diktatúra si vyslúžila medzinárodné odsúdenie za utláčanie ľudí Ogoni v delte rieky Niger. Zničené dediny, ich obyvateľia bez rozdielu zabíjaní a aktivista a spisovatel Ken Saro-Wiwa držaný vo väzení viac než rok na vymyslených obvineniach a potom popravený.

(en) Maybe you'll never get on the radio, maybe no one within any kind of music establishment will support you…but even if it's just within your group of friends, you can create your own culture. These words from Michael Muhammad Knight, an American Muslim and unofficial founder of the Taqwacore music scene, spell out the alienated, courageous autonomy of punk culture in bright colours. Knight is the focal point of Omar Majeed's explosive doc; the other subjects are a handful of American Muslim musicians who've been galvanized by Knight's book The Taqwacores. Caught in a tug of war between Western corporate permissiveness and a religion that's become hardened and constricting, these kids decide to grab guitars and change their reality. "In the so-called War of Civilizations, we're pointing the middle finger in both directions," says Knight near the beginning of the film. What follows certainly bears him out: 80 minutes of gleeful taboo-smashing, poignant soul-searching and loud, furious music.

If the Islamic punk scene grows into something major (and on the evidence of this movie, it likely will), Majeed and Knight will surely go down in history as its first big proponents and chroniclers. Catch it now and you can say that you were one of the first to be in on something really big.

(sk) Hudba bez ideológie, ponúkajúca autonómiu a priestor k vlastnému vyjadreniu. Tak vníma punkrock skupina mladých moslimov a moslimiek, tvoriacich niekoľko rôznych kapiel. Väčšinu z nich oslovila kniha Michaela Muhammada Knighta „The Taqwacores, punkový manifest“. Knight, konvertovaný moslim, a jeho priatelia zo skupiny The Kominas zorganizujú turné po amerických veľkomestách a neskôr koncertujú aj v Pakistane, kde sa snažia punkrock a vlastnú interpretáciu Koránu priblížiť tamojším moslimom.
