Animal rights activist and filmmaker, Scott Cardinal, takes a look at the methods used by a clandestine ALF cell in the U.S.A. to carry out anonymous raids on university laboratories, factory farms, and puppy mills in order to place animals in safe homes where they can live free from unnecessary suffering.

(en) We love our mobile phones and the selection between different models has never been bigger. But the production of phones has a dark, bloody side. The main part of minerals used to produce phones is coming from the mines in the Eastern DR Congo. The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals and thereby finances a civil war that, according to human rights organisations,has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II: During the last 15 years the conflict has cost the lives of more than 5 million people and 300,000 women have been raped. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals.
The Documentary Blood in the Mobile shows the connection between our phones and the civil war in the Congo. Director Frank Poulsen travels to DR Congo to see the illegal mine industry with his own eyes.
He gets access to Congo s largest tin-mine, which is being controlled by different armed groups, and where children work for days in narrow mine tunnels to dig out the minerals
that end up in our phones.

Vypraví se proto na místo činu a po náročné cestě se dostává do jednoho z největších dolů v regionu v konžské Bisie. Dětská práce, prostituce nezletilých dívek, smrt zavalením a přestřelky mezi členy místních gangů jsou zde každodenní realitou. Stejně jako všudypřítomná korupce v celé Demokratické republice Kongo.

(en) As we've been telling you this week, tens of thousands of villagers are protesting in Wukan, in Guangdong Province. Now the situation has become a standoff as villagers have kicked out both local officials and police. That came after the suspicious death of one villager in police custody. Here's the latest.

The over twenty-thousand residents of the village of Wukan in south China's Guangdong Province have expelled all local Communist Party authorities, including police, and blocked road access to the village.

The British newspaper The Telegraph was able to get a journalist on the ground in Wukan on Tuesday. Malcom Moore called the current incident the first time on record that the Party has "lost all control" in a situation of "open revolt." This marks the latest escalation in an ongoing confrontation between villagers and local Communist Party officials they've called corrupt and abusive.

For three months, Wukan residents have been staging occasional large-scale protests against a longstanding series of abuses committed by local Party officials. The villagers' biggest grievance was corrupt officials profiting from illegally selling the villagers' land.

The current intensified protest, including the expelling of all police and officials, came after the death in Party custody of Xue Jinbo. He was a Wukan resident who had served as a negotiator with authorities. Party officials claim Xue died of "cardiac failure." But Xue's family say there was evidence of torture on his body, including broken thumbs and bruises.

By Monday, locals had stopped an attempt by hundreds of police and security personnel to enter Wukan. Those forces retreated to a backup location three miles distant, and are now blocking all food and water from entering the town.

As of now, at the fifth day of what some are calling a rebellion, police remain blocked from entering, and some townspeople are making comments suggesting that the confrontation has become about more than just land seizures.

The Telegraph quoted one villager as saying "We are not sleeping. A hundred men are keeping watch. We do not know what the government's next move will be, but we know we cannot trust them ever again."

The situation in Wukan remains uncertain. Other media have managed to enter the village. But anything about Wukan is being quickly censored on the Chinese internet.

(cz) Čína: Wukchan pod kontrolou obyvatel – komunistická strana a policie vyhnány z města

Wukchan, městečko položené v jihovýchodní části Číny, je v této chvíli kontrolováno a řízeno přímo jeho obyvateli, potom co byli před týdnem z města a jeho okolí silou vyhnáni místní radní z komunistické strany a policie.

Tato na čínskou realitu nezvyklá a bezprecedentní situace byla důsledkem střetů místních obyvatel s policií v boji o zachování komunální půdy, kterou radní plánovali zprivatizovat (což by pro mnoho místních znamenalo propad do bídy), a vraždy jednoho z delegátů hnutí odporu, vybraného protestujícími obyvateli.

Spor propukl již v září, když se objevilo podezření, že místní vládci z komunistické strany chtějí rozprodat komunální půdu, bezplatně užívanou obyvateli k pěstování plodin a chovu dobytka. Novým vlastníkem půdy se měla stát firma „Country Garden“, specializující se na stavebnictví a prodej exkluzivních bytů.

21. září začalo několik stovek obyvatel Wukchanu pokojně protestovat před místním sídlem komunistické strany. Jak narůstal dav nespokojených obyvatel, začali protestující blokovat okolní komunikace a napadat budovy soukromých firem v nedaleké průmyslové zóně. Tři protestující byli zatčeni policií, načež se následujícího dne shromáždilo asi 100 místních lidí, kteří obklíčili policejní stanici a požadovali jejich propuštění. Policie a najatí provokatéři bez varování a brutálně napadli solidární protest. Napadli shromážděné, mezi nimi děti a starší osoby.

Když se policie stáhla, pokusili se radní ukázat ochotu smířlivého řešení narůstajícího konfliktu. Avšak zdánlivý klid a stabilizace, které trvaly několik týdnů, skončily krvavě 11. prosince smrtí Süe ťin poa. Süe byl jedním ze třinácti delegátu zvolených z řad obyvatelstva během události v září. Podle svědectví Kaoa, zetě zavražděného delegáta, byl mrtvý Süe celý pomlácený, měl zkrvavený obličej a polámané prsty. Podle zprávy státní informační agentury Sinchua zemřel Süe na následky srdečního infarktu. Pokud je to pravda, byl to důsledek brutálního mučení policisty.

Místní obyvatelé se rozzuřili, jakmile se k nim zpráva o smrti Süeho dostala. Do ulic vyrazily tisíce místních, kteří bez váhání s rozhodnou převahou napadli místní policejní stanici. Policejní síly utekly z města a vzdálily se od něj na několik kilometrů. Místní postavili barikády a zablokovali hlavní ulice města kvůli obraně. Po násilném průběhu událostí se státní úředníci a představitelé komunistické strany v obavě o život rozhodli utéct z města. Podle dostupných informací desátý den po vzpouře stále stojí barikády kolem města na jeho obranu a zásoby potravin se odhadují ještě na víc než týden. Události z Wukchanu jsou v této chvíli silně cenzurovány čínským „fire-wallem“ (cenzura internetu pozn. překl.). Avšak díky dovednostem hackerů se část informací dostala ven a obletěla svět. V průběhu posledních týdnů se nejprůmyslovějšími regiony Číny znovu prohnala vlna dělnických nepokojů a stávek. Nadnárodní korporace čelí dalším ztrátám ze slábnoucího odbytu exportovaných produktů, avšak kapitalisté požadují další zisky generované na úkor vykořisťovaných čínských pracujících.

Přestože se Číně podařilo ustát první vlnu ekonomické krize, zhoršující se podmínky pracující třídy v západních zemích začínají mít dopad na kondici podniků a ekonomik zemí po celém světě, a stále silněji také v Číně. V následujícím roce se sílící revolučností pracující třídy v Číně, s dalšími revolučními vlnami a vystoupeními zdejších dělníků můžeme být svědky událostí, které „arabskou revoluci“ hravě strčí do kapsy a můžou udat směr a podobu zápasu utlačovaných tříd s kapitálem do budoucna.

The army soldiers in full riot gear have been savagely beating a seemingly unconscious female protester with big sticks, kicking her and stomping on her chest. Security forces lashed out ruthlessly on armless civilians and burned down tents that had been put up by activists outside the parliament building to camp in protest against the military rule. The internet community therefore questions the methods of the military regime who took over power after the ousting of the ex-President Hosni Mubarak in February.

In Sachsen-Anhalt gipfeln die vielfältigen neonazistischen Aktivitäten sowie die gesamtgesellschaftlichen Ausprägungen von Rassismus und Nationalismus im jährlichen Aufmarsch von etwa 1000 Neonazis durch Magdeburg. Um den Nazis im Januar die Straße streitig zu machen rufen antifaschistische Gruppen zu Blockaden des zivilen Ungehorsams auf.

Ein jährliches Trauerspiel: Neonazis aus der ganzen Republik marschieren jammernd durch Magdeburg

Seit 1999 meldet eine sogenannte „Initiative gegen das Vergessen" den rechten Aufmarsch an. Die Neonazis versuchen ihren Geschichtsrevisionismus zu verbreiten, indem sie die Opfer des Faschismus mit den TäterInnen auf eine Ebene stellen und die Bombardierung Magdeburgs am 16.01.1945 nicht als Folge des von Deutschland entfachten Zweiten Weltkrieges benennen. Ausgeblendet wird der gesamte historische Kontext: die Verbrechen der Nazidiktatur, die Bombardierung spanischer, englischer und anderer europäischer Städte sowie die massenhafte Vernichtung von Menschen in Konzentrationslagern. In Wirklichkeit beendete die militärische Zerschlagung Nazideutschlands den Krieg und rettete unzähligen Menschen das Leben.

Landtagswahlen verloren, aber das Umfeld entwickelt sich prächtig

Der jährliche „Trauermarsch" ist leider nur einer von vielen Wegen, auf welchen Neonazis in Magdeburg und Sachsen-Anhalt versuchen, politisches Terrain zu erkämpfen. Die NPD nahm im März 2011 an den Landtagswahlen teil und verkündete diese als „Schicksalswahl für die gesamte nationale Bewegung". Der knapp verpasste Einzug ins Parlament (mit 4,6% statt den erwarteten 7%) war ein Leberhaken für die dominierende Nazistruktur in Sachsen-Anhalt. Die innerparteilichen Folgen sind neben der hohen Verschuldung auch der personelle Austausch der gesamten Führungsebene des Landesverbandes.
Neben den neonazistischen Gruppen machen auch rechtsoffene Zusammenhänge immer häufiger auf sich aufmerksam. So beispielsweise der als gemeinnützig eingetragene Verein „Child Abuse Fight e.V.", welcher in inhaltlicher und personeller Überschneidung mit der lokalen Naziszene die Forderung nach der Todesstrafe für „Kinderschänder" auf die Straße trägt.1 Oder die rechte Hooligan-Gruppe „Adrenalin", die sich durch Angriffe auf linke Projekte und vermeintliche Antifaschist_innen politisch profiliert.2
Auch die rassistisch motivierten Übergriffe, an welchen häufig Neonazis beteiligt sind, gehören hierzulande zur hässlichen Normalität. Zwischen Januar und August 2011 dokumentierte die Mobile Beratungsstelle für Opfer rechter Gewalt bereits 27 Übergriffe in Sachsen-Anhalt, wobei die Dunkelziffer weit höher liegen dürfte.3

Deutschland und seine Nazis

Inhaltlich ist die neonazistische Ideologie in ihrem Rassismus und Nationalismus durchaus anschlussfähig an gesamtgesellschaftliche Diskurse. In der Bevölkerung der Bundesrepublik ist latenter Rassismus weit verbreitet, was Studien seit vielen Jahren belegen.4 Von staatlicher Seite wird ebendieser Rassismus konsequent umgesetzt, u.a. mit der menschenunwürdigen Behandlung von Flüchtlingen, repressiven Gesetzen gegen Nicht-Deutsche und racial profiling bei Polizeikontrollen.5
Patriotismus, Nationalismus und die Identifikation mit dem nationalen Kollektiv Deutschland gedeihen unter fleißiger Pflege von Parteien und Zivilgesellschaft. Unter anderem führte dies bei der WM 2010 auch in Magdeburg zu nationalistischen Ausschreitungen deutscher Fußballfans.6

Let's block them hard!

Wir als Antifaschisten und Antifaschistinnen wollen den Aufmarsch effektiv stören und wenn möglich verhindern. Unsere Mittel sind Blockaden des zivilen Ungehorsams, auf welchen wir uns mit möglichst vielen Beteiligten den Neonazis entschlossen entgegenstellen werden.
Im vergangenen Jahr konnte die Aufmarsch-Route an mehreren Stellen kurzzeitig blockiert werden. Die Erfahrungen aus Städten wir Dresden und Leipzig zeigen, dass es mit mehr Menschen durchaus machbar ist, Naziaufmärsche erfolgreich zu verhindern.
Von unseren Blockaden am 14. Januar soll keine Eskalation ausgehen.

Unsere Solidarität gilt all jenen, die an diesem Tag mit uns oder auf anderen Wegen versuchen, den
Naziaufmarsch zu verhindern. Von stationären Protestmeilen, Bratwurst-Antifaschismus und Bühnenprogrammen mit Polizeiorchestern halten wir dagegen rein gar nichts.7

In 1981 Lifeforce Founder Peter Hamilton and camera person Chas Leckie travelled to numerous research laboratories throughout Canada. The goal was to expose the secretive experiments on animals. The public taxpayers and donors have a right to know. These same and/or similar experiments continue today.
Our upcoming campaigns will have never seen before vivisection video/photos. We will urge politicians to give more access to vivisection information in Canada. This new campaign will show how the repeated use of animal models have not cured human diseases and injuries. One example is the crippling of animals in spinal cord experiments funded by those at th Rick Hansen Institute and the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Medical breakthroughs that help people have resulted from studying people.

(en) Barbara Kopple's documentary account of the 1974 strike of Kentucky mine workers is arguably one of the finest documentaries ever made in the U.S. and possibly the best on the problems of organised labour. The strike began when the miners working for the Eastover Mining Co. joined the UMW, and its corporate parent, Duke Power, refused to sign the standard union contract. By living with the 180-odd families involved in the strike, Kopple shows the backbreaking burdens of the miners' life in the best of times and the looming fear of destitution in the worst.

As the strikers strive to remain united through a difficult year, Kopple photographs the picketing, the company's use of state troopers to keep the roads open for scabs, the showdowns between the miners and strikebreakers brandishing firearms. After several shootings, one miner is finally killed. During the man's wake, a memorable sequence, his mother collapses. While the film is unabashedly partisan, it's worth remembering that the company's refusal to sign a contract was condemned by the National Labor Relations Board and that the corporation agreed to sign only under heavy pressure from federal mediators. The Oscar-winning HARLAN COUNTY, USA is a landmark in the history of American documentary filmmaking.

(cz) Vynikající dokument o stávce horníků v USA. Filmaři se pohybovali skutečně uvnitř stávky. Velmi silné jsou hlavně scény noční přestřelky se stávkokazy, pohřeb zastřeleného horníka a vůbec celé prostředí amerického hornického městečka je šokující. Vše je podbarveno originálními písněmi zpívaných a mnohdy i složených samotnými horníky.

(en) What To Do In Case of Fire? tells the humorous and touching story of six former creative anarchists who lived as house squatters in Berlin during its heyday in the 80s when Berlin was still an island in the middle of the former eastern Germany. At the end of the 80s they went their separate ways with the exception of Tim and Hotte, who have remained true to their ideals and continue to fight the issues they did as a group. In 2000, with Berlin as Germany's new capital, an event happens forcing the group out of existential reason to reunite and, ultimately, come to grips with the reason they separated 12 years ago.

Odtržena od rodiny a své země je zde pak držena jako otrokyně v rodině súdánského diplomata, dokud není poslána k jeho příbuzným do Londýna, kde je nadále vystavena špatnému zacházení ze strany svých "majitelů". Zoufalá mladá žena se nakonec náhodně setkává s jedním krajanem, s jehož pomocí se snaží uprchnout a znovu se shledat se svým otcem, který ji po celou dobu nepřestal hledat. Film poukazuje na fakt, že podobný osud v Londýně denně prožívá na 5 000 lidí, kteří zde údajně žijí jako novodobí otroci.

(en) On January 16 the anarchist Giannis Dimitrakis trying with others to rob the branch of National Bank Street Solon. While the perpetrators left the bank having taken with them the money, the guard of the bank decides to pursue the perpetrators and notifies the police, believing that the money is insured bank are more valuable than the lives of people.

A few minutes later, the center of Athens policemen will encircle the perpetrators and ignoring the crowd surrounding them, they will begin a barrage of fire from which badly injured John Demetrakis and a passerby.

Trying to stop the perpetrators, the guard of the bank and he gets hurt too heavy.

Since that time the state and the media will begin an orgy of disinformation, slander and tromousterias to anarchist-antiauthoritarian space.

This video captures all this orchestrated effort targeting and slander anarchists, 3 of whom are forced to take refuge underground.

Επιχειρώντας να σταματήσει τους δράστες, ο φρουρός της τράπεζας θα τραυματιστεί και αυτός πολύ βαριά.

Από τη στιγμή εκείνη το κράτος και τα Μ.Μ.Ε. θα ξεκινήσουν ένα όργιο παραπληροφόρησης, κατασυκοφάντησης και τρομοϋστερίας με στόχο τον αναρχικό-αντιεξουσιαστικό χώρο.

A cloud of deadly gases exploded from the pesticide plant that belonged to Union Carbide India, a subsidiary of the US-based Union Carbide Company because of an exothermic reaction due to the entry of water to the tank containing 42 tons of methyl isocyanate releasing large amount of toxic gases into the atmosphere. The gases flooded into the homes of sleeping people of Bhopal, causing great panic as people woke up with a burning sensation in their lungs, suffocation, cough, burning eyes and vomiting, breathlessness, stomach pains and vomiting.

Pri takejto vláde bolo iba otázkou času, kedy sa rasizmus a sexizmus zaslúži o vznik Ženskej armády, koalície revolučných feministiek bojujúcich proti neprávu prostredníctvom alternatívnych médií a propagandy. Keď však mladá černošská lesba, ktorá verejne vyjadrovala podporu Ženskej armáde, zomiera vo väzení, jej súdružky berú do rúk zbrane.

(en) ‘Against violence, wherever it comes from’: a phrase that we often hear fromAdonis Georgiadis, as much as from someone who belongs to the political left, or a householder who happens to have alleged progressive ideas and occasionally takes to the streets during a strike.

We will refer only slightly to a perception often met in numerous strike demonstrations; to the notion which pretty much says ‘no provocation should take place, no clash, this can damage only us, and the movement will step backward,’ etc.; a perception which can mainly be found in a large part of the reformist sold-out left of the regime.

But in reality this view merely benefits the State. Because as many as the demonstrators may be, if the State sees people in the streets resigning behind a loudspeaker or asking everyone to calm down when cops provoke the crowd, then it knows that these people are self-controlled and cannot cause anyproblem.

A spontaneous massive movement is what scares the State or, in a massive strike, whether this crowd can become uncontrollable, confrontational and disturb the peace, order and safety which they seek as existent and try to impose.

They’re not scared of any pacifist demonstration, any peaceful protest, as massive as it may be; that’s why the State itself praises these events (as it happened i.e. in the strike of May 20th, 2010, which was clearly a peaceful, if not an anti-violent demonstration; back then everyone, the ministers, the Prime Minister Papandreou and others, spoke bullshit to the corporate media praising the demonstrators and saying that each strike should be similar, and such nonsense). They’re really frightened of clashes, disturbance of normality, attacks on state and capitalist targets, because such actions cause them an immediate problem.

Of course we’re not fooled, nor do we live in our own private world. Obviously we don’t believe that if we choose to attack two or three targets in a general strike, the revolution will come. But we do believe that we owe to counter-attack those who wish to control our lives; those who dare to think that we exist just to be their slaves. Against those who devastate and steal our lives from us, against the oppression and barbarity of everyday life in capitalism, against the violence which we suffer daily from the State and the bosses, the least we can do is to counter-attack violently.

To spoil the plans of those who think that this day will be a simple strike stroll in the city centre; those who will seek a pacifist march.

On October 19th, let’s give a violent response to those who want us to live our entire lives as slaves so that a bunch of people eat with golden spoons and their rotten system survives.

19. OKTOBER: ALLE AUF DIE STRASSEN!!!!!

‚Gegen Gewalt, wo immer sie auch herkommen mag‘ – eine Phrase, die wir oft von Adonis Georgiadis hören, genauso wie von anderen, die der politischen Linken angehören oder Immobilieneigentümer, die als progressiv angesehen werden und gelegentlich im Laufe von Streiks auf die Straße gehen.

Wir werden uns nur entfernt mit einem solchen Verständnis befassen, wie wir es in zahlreichen Streiks erleben können. Mit jenem Verständnis, das mehr oder weniger sagt: „Es sollte keine Provokation stattfinden, keine Auseinandersetzung, die uns schaden und die Bewegung in Misskredit bringen könnte.“ Es ist ein Verständnis, das hauptsächlich in großen Teilen der reformistischen, verräterischen Linken des Regimes zu finden ist.

In Wirklichkeit nützt diese Ansicht dem Staat. So zahlreich die Demonstrierenden auch sein mögen; wenn der Staat die Menschen auf den Straßen sieht wie sie hinter Lausprechern und Megaphonen verstecken und die Masse auffordern, ruhig zu bleiben, wenn die Cops provozieren, dann weiß er, dass diese Menschen alle selbstkontrolliert sind und nicht irgendein Problem bewirken.

Eine spontane, massive Bewegung ist es, was den Staat beängstigt oder, in einem massiven Streik, ob diese Masse unkontrollierbar, konfrontativ wird und den Frieden, die Ordnung und Sicherheit derer stört, die sie existenziell benötigen und sie anderen versuchen aufzuzwingen.

Sie haben keine Angst vor irgendeiner pazifistischen Demonstration, irgendeinem friedlichen Protest so massive r sie auch seien könnten. Deshalb lobt selbst der Staat diese Veranstaltungen (so wie es zum Beispiel be idem Streik am 20. Mai geschehen ist, der eindeutig friedlich war, wenn nicht sogar eine Anti-Gewalt Demonstration. Damals verkündeten alle Minister einschließlich des Premiers Papandreou den Medien den Blödsinn, dass die Demonstrierenden das Recht auf friedlichen Protest haben und jeder Streik so oder so ähnlichen ablaufen sollte.) Sie kriegen erst Angst, wenn Auseinandersetzungen sich ausbreiten, die Normalität gestört wird oder Angriffe auf staatliche und kapitalistische Ziele durchgeführt werden, weil solche Aktionen sie vor ein unmittelbares Problem stellen.

Natürlich lassen wir uns nicht zum Narren halten, auch leben wir nicht in unserer eigenen Privatwelt. Offensichtlich glauben wir nicht daran, dass, sobald wir uns entschließen zwei, drei Angriffe auf einem Generalstreik durchzuführen, die Revolution kommen wird. Aber wir glaube, dass wir jenen einen Gegenangriff schuldig sind, die versuchen unser Leben zu kontrollieren; jene, die es wagen zu denken, dass wir nur existieren, um ihre Sklaven zu sein; gegen jene, die uns zu Grunde richten und uns unsere Leben stehlen; gegen die Unterdrückung und Barbarei des täglichen Lebens im Kapitalismus; gegen die Gewalt, die wir täglich vom Staat und den Bossen erleiden. Das geringste, das wir tun können, ist es, uns zu wehren!!!!

Um die Pläne jener zu vereiteln, die denken, dass dieser Tag ein einfacher Streikspaziergang durch das Stadtzentrum wird; jene, die sich einen pazifistischen Marsch erhoffen.
Lasst uns am 19. Oktober eine stürmische Antwort jenen geben, die wollen, dass wir unser ganzes Leben als Sklaven leben, damit ein Haufen von Menschen mit Goldlöffeln essen wird und ihr verfaultes System überlebt.

(cz) Krátký seriál rekapitulující jedny z největších myšlenkových konceptů a mýtů 20/21. století, velmi informativní, nekompromisní, temné, nesnaží se to naznačovat kudy z toho marasmu ven, ale už jen skopáním finační elity do kuličky, vyvrácením konceptu celosvětového ekologického vybalancovaného systému, prokázáním, že demokratizace se neodehraje skrze net a když, bude trvat jen krátce. To všechno jsou velmi závažné závěry, které si dodnes mnozí neuvědomují.

(en) The Black Cat Sabotage Handbook is a resistance movement artifact that mysteriously appeared in hard copy (thank you, whoever you are!) in the distro area at the 2010 Wild Roots Feral Futures eco-defense & rewilding gathering.

After more than a year and numerous requests, the Dirty Hands Collective decided to release the manual on-line, piece by piece (the manual is 136 pages long so scanning it all at once for release at places like ZineLibrary.info seemed unrealistic, though we had planned to compile the sections as we release them for later uploading in one file).

Then, alas, shortly after getting started scanning and uploading yesterday, and after announcing it on several anarchist websites, someone did our job for us! Many thanks to the commenter on Infoshop News who provided the link to a download of the full manual, apparently uploaded today for our (everyone’s) benefit. We’ve uploaded it here as well in hopes that the download will be faster. Please let us know if you experience any problems. Enjoy!

As far as we can tell, it has not existed anywhere else online, yet. As to the history of the document, we can uncover little other than one source that credits its authorship to Avalon, aka William Rogers, the Green Scare arrestee who committed suicide in his cell shortly after arrest. We’d like confirmation of this, one way or the other, and regardless, would like to dedicate this blog to Avalon’s spirit and memory.

The Shock Doctrine is the latest documentary from acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom, co-directed by Mat Whitecross. Based on Naomi Klein's bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine argues that America's 'free market' policies have come to dominate the world through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

Both the film and the book argue that governments all over the world exploit natural disasters, economic crises and wars to push through radical free market policies. Klein calls this 'disaster capitalism' and in her view, disaster capitalism is as effective as psychiatric shock therapy at wiping our collective memory.

The film concludes that the result is often catastrophic for ordinary people and hugely beneficial to big corporations. The documentary also adds to Klein's thesis - which was written before the recent market turmoil - and includes an analysis of how the financial world got into its current troubled state.

"Šoková doktria" v tomto pripade znamena, ze pokud chce nekdo neco anebo nekoho zmenit, bude se mu to darit snaze, pokud vyuzije okamziku, kdy bude jedinec anebo skupina lidi zmatena, dezorientovana, v soku. Tato technika se da pouzit nejen na jednotlivce, ale i cele narody, ktere jsou po prirodnich, valecnych a jinych katastrofach obzvlastne snadno manipulovatelne a preprogramovatelne. V takovou chvili je mnohem snadnejsi provadet nepopularni ekonomicke zmeny, nebo prijimat zakony potlacujici lidska prava. Mnohe staty a spolecnosti tak dokazou kazdou krizi a valku velmi dobre vyuzit a vydelat na ni. Naomi Klein je tu kriticka vuci Miltonu Friedmanovi a jeho pokracovatelum a teoriim, podle nichz by stat mel prestat plnit mnohe sve socialni funkce (doprava, skolstvi) a nechat je na pospas volnemu trhu, a take vuci jeho vyuzivani prave zminenych ekonomickych sokovych terapii. Autorka knihy nebyla s vyslednou podobou dokumentu prilis spokojena a distancovala se od nej (nikoliv vsak kvuli obsahu, ale zvolene forme - pred manipulativnim hlasem vypravece doplnenym archivnimi ilustracemi a jeji prednaskou by pry dala prednost mozaice rozhovoru s ruznymi lidmi). Kdo chce vedet vic, necht sahne i po knize. Dokument je jeji zjednodusenou a zkracenou verzi.

Friedmanova teze, že jen krize vyvolává skutečnou změnu, je podle Naomi Kleinové ideologickým podkladem neoliberální svaté trojice - privatizace, deregulace a snižování sociálních výdajů - vůči níž se vymezuje také ve filmu natočeném podle její knihy o vzestupu katastrofického kapitalismu.

Quando vedo certe cose penso che non c'è più speranza per l'uomo,ma per fortuna molti hanno il coraggio di ribellarsi e lottare,protestare e reagire... jménem „Pete“ s kamerou na farmu Wiles Hog a tajně tam natočil šokující materiál o nelidském týrání chovaných zvířat. Dokument vznikl v produkci HBO.Každý rok je v USA miliarda zvířat
určena k porážce a konzumaci. A na farmách, kde se zvířata pěstují, se s nimi často zachází velmi krutě. Tento dokument z produkce HBO sleduje tajné vyšetřování na farmě Wiles Hog v Ohiu,
kam pronikl s kamerou člen skupiny The Human Farming Association (HFA), hájící práva zvířat na důstojné zacházení. Organizace dostala tip od zaměstnance ohledně týrání zvířat, k němuž na
farmě dochází, a muž pod krycím jménem „Pete“ se pak na vlastní oči mohl přesvědčit, že zprávy nelhaly. V průběhu šesti týdnů natočil šokující záběry, z nichž vznikl tento dokument, a natočený
materiál též předal oddělení šerifa, aby situaci na farmě prošetřil. Poté bylo proti Kenu Wilesovi, jeho synovi Joeovi a Dusty Stroudovi, zaměstnanci, který se na brutalitě vůči zvířatům podílel,
vzneseno několik obvinění…

Being different than others, and to confront the community pressure are not always easy. Especially if you are a gay in a Muslim country such as Egypt or Iran you have to face the fact that you may have jail sentence, be tortured or be punished by death for the homosexual act. According to the Islamic law, a homosexual should be thrown from a mountain or stoned to death. Ibn Abbas, Muhammad's cousin, reports how homosexuals were punished in Muhammad's period: "If you find anyone doing as Lot's people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done" (Abu Dawud no. 4447)

A Jihad for Love dares to be the voice of the silenced ones and tells the struggles of gay/lesbian people from Egypt, Iran, India and so on. Some decided to get marry with a woman, some leaved their country to avoid the death penalty, some risked to be away from their home and chose to be a refugee to live with their real identities.

This is their tragic story.

Where the calls of frogs once filled the air, scientists now hear only silence. Ecosystems are beginning to unravel, and important medical cures are vanishing. A fungus called chytrid has been identified as the major culprit, but no way has yet been found to stop it. In Central Panama, biologists have evacuated frogs from the forest in order to save their lives; today, their facility shelters 58 species of frogs – some of the rarest on Earth. Yet two hours south of the Panama Canal there is a small patch of forest called Burbayar where frogs still seem to be healthy and unaffected, living as they have for millions of years. The question is for how long?

Režisérka si se zpovídanými dívkami i ženami tyká, což přepokládá navázání bližších vztahů, a vystupuje jako pozorný pozorovatel jejich počínání. A ony si zjevně neuvědomují, nakolik jsou směšné, když bez výhrad podléhají všelijakým módním trendům.
Film Ženy pro měny režisérky Eriky Hníkové je tragikomický příběh o ženách, které citlivě vnímají současný ideál ženské krásy a chtějí se mu co nejvíce přiblížit. A je to také film o spoustě peněz, které se díky síle tohoto ideálu denně utrácejí. Paní Eva vloží své tělo do rukou plastického chirurga a nechá si zvětšit prsa tak, jak po tom celý život toužila. Paní Magda zkouší všechny možné i nemožné prostředky na hubnutí. Slečna Karolína používá tu nejnovější kosmetiku a kupuje si oblečení podle poslední módy. Dívka Zuzana přichází na soutěž Topmodelka nového tisíciletí a chce uspět. Všechny hrdinky touží po těle modelek z titulních stran dámských časopisů. Doslova bojují o dokonalé tělo a jejich příběhy mnohdy působí až absurdně a komicky. Jejich život je ve filmu sledován v průběhu jednoho roku.

Vedle těchto žen vystupují ve filmu i další lidé - zástupkyně redakce ženského časopisu, který se podílí na vytváření současného ženského ideálu, Dara Rolins jako mediální ikona s umělým poprsím, plastický chirurg, který operuje paní Evu, Linda Kazdová, jež zvítězila v americké reality show s názvem Joe Millionaire, a členky Feministické skupiny 8. března.
Všichni dohromady popisují a vytvářejí pestrý obraz současného světa, kde fenomén dokonalého ženského těla hraje hlavní roli. Situacím, které zažila snad každá dnešní žena, se můžeme buď smát, anebo si nad nimi postesknout. Celovečerní dokument Ženy pro měny je film o ženách, které naplno prožívají současné trendy a žijí pod taktovkou všudypřítomného ideálu dokonalého ženského těla. Úsměvný i smutný příběh zároveň je však určen nejen jim, ale také všem mužům, kteří nežijí sami.

(en) Bringing Down A Dictator (56 min) documents the spectacular defeat of Slobodan Milosevic in October, 2000, not by force of arms, as many had predicted, but by an ingenious nonviolent strategy of honest elections and massive civil disobedience.
Milosevic was strengthened by patriotic fervor when NATO bombed Yugoslavia in early 1999, but a few months later, a student movement named Otpor! (“Resistance” in Serbian) launched a surprising offensive. Audaciously demanding the removal of Milosevic, they recruited where discontent was strongest, in the Serbian heartland.
Their weapons were rock concerts and ridicule, the internet and email, spray-painted slogans and a willingness to be arrested. Otpor students became the shock troops in an army of human rights, pro-democracy, anti-war, women’s groups, and opposition political parties. Their slogan: "He’s Finished!"
Trained in nonviolent action and partially financed by the US and Western Europe, they forged a unified political opposition, fought to stop vote fraud, and systematically undermined police and army loyalty. When Milosevic refused to accept defeat at the polls, the opposition called a general strike. As normal life ground to a halt, Serbs by the hundreds of thousands poured into the capital on October 5 to seize the Federal Parliament in a dramatic triumph for democracy. Narrated by Martin Sheen, this program aired on national PBS in 2002, and was honored with a George Foster Peabody award.

(en) This was the official Redwood Summer recruitment video which I collaborated on with Mary Liz Thomson and Tim Modok Pearson, two Video Guys Mike Roselle introduced to me.

After we finished it, I took it and two musicians with me on the official Redwood Summer Road Show, which took two months and 10,000 miles to complete. It even spurred its own three-day road blockade action on Mount Graham and a brand new video of that action, Uprising On Mount Graham, which is also up here.

It was also future Earth Liberation Front arsonist Avalon's first arrest action (He was the first one to volunteer and get arrested on Mount Graham). Apparently it was my Prescott Arizona road show presentation, the last of the tour, and this video that inspired him to join up with Earth First! back in 1990.

(en) Carmen works the graveyard shift in one of Tijuana’s maquiladoras, the multinationally-owned factories that came to Mexico for its cheap labor. After making television components all night, Carmen comes home to a shack she built out of recycled garage doors, in a neighborhood with no sewage lines or electricity. She suffers from kidney damage and lead poisoning from her years of exposure to toxic chemicals. She earns six dollars a day. But Carmen is not a victim. She is a dynamic young woman, busy making a life for herself and her children.

As Carmen and a million other maquiladora workers produce televisions, electrical cables, toys, clothes, batteries and IV tubes, they weave the very fabric of life for consumer nations. They also confront labor violations, environmental devastation and urban chaos -- life on the frontier of the global economy. In MAQUILAPOLIS, Carmen and her colleague Lourdes reach beyond the daily struggle for survival to organize for change: Carmen takes a major television manufacturer to task for violating her labor rights. Lourdes pressures the government to clean up a toxic waste dump left behind by a departing factory.

As they work for change, the world changes too: a global economic crisis and the availability of cheaper labor in China begin to pull the factories away from Tijuana, leaving Carmen, Lourdes and their colleagues with an uncertain future.

Dynamická Carmen spolu se skupinou žen z Tijuany se rozhodne nahlas vyslovit otázku svých zaměstnaneckých práv a dalších problémů, s nimiž se denně setkává. Svou činnost průběžně natáčí na video. Tvůrci filmu zdařile prokládají tyto strohé záznamy stylizovanými poetickými pasážemi a vytvářejí tak velmi osobní snímek.

The film also depicts the ability of women and children to handle their everyday life after a dramatic war experience. Many of them live in tents or in ruins without walls or roofs. They are all in need of money, food, water and electricity. Others have lost family members, or are left with seriously injured children. Can war solve conflicts or create peace? The film follows three children through the war and the period after the ceasefire.

Záběry dopadajících bomb střídá se zobrazeními jejich následků v ulicích, v nemocnicích i v ruinách zasažených domů. Film také zachycuje schopnost žen a dětí řešit jejich každodenní život po dramatických zkušenostech z války. Mnozí z nich žijí ve stanech nebo v troskách bez stěn a střech. Všichni jsou v nouzi bez peněz, jídla, vody a elektřiny. Vše, co se podaří propašovat tunely je velmi drahé. Mnozí přišli o rodinné příslušníky, nebo jsou ponecháni s těžce zraněnými dětmi. Může taková válka řešit konflikty, či dokonce vytvořit mír? Film sleduje tři děti v době války a v období po příměří.

Though they could have made a brilliant career in show business, they preferred to travel from continent to continent, from country to country and from town to town giving open-air performances. On their way they draw others interested in living out the same experience. For the last six years they have traveled 40,000 kilometers, through 27 countries in four continents, on bikes as tall or taller than they are, and weigh sometimes twice as much. Over 125 people have traveled with them. Their bicycles are made by themselves from parts of discarded bicycles which they find on their way. They are the “CYCLOWN CIRCUS”. The film documents their passage through the city of Hania in Crete, following their performances in parks, squares and schools, discussing with them about their experiences, viewpoint and philosophy.

Stopování, naskakování do rozjetých náklaďáků, rozzlobené medvědy, píchavé dikobrazy nebo setkání s husou golfistkou a kačerem coby nosičem holí. Jen se zeptejte Kate a Humphrey! Jsou to dva vlci z jedné smečky. Ovšem s pořádnými rozdíly. Kate je z rodu Alfa a její otec je jeden z vůdců smečky, takže se mladá vlčí dáma musí chovat podle toho – vznešeně a odpovědně vůči osudu celé rodiny (trochu připomíná bojovnici Laru Croft). Humphrey je Omega vlk, to znamená, že stojí na nejnižší příčce hierarchie. To mu umožňuje být absolutně svobodný - tráví celé dny s kamarády, baví se a paří. Aby zajistil klid ve smečce, otec Kate se rozhodne zasnoubit svou dceru se synem konkurenčního Alfa samce. Nicméně, čáru přes rozpočet všem plánům udělají lidé. Při lovu zasáhnou Kate a Humphreyho uspávající střelou. Oba mladí vlci pak procitnou daleko od domova v přírodním parku v Idahu, kde by podle lidí měli založit rodinu. Oni se ale rozhodnou jinak – vypraví se napříč kontinentem zpět domů, do Jasperova národního parku v Kanadě. Jak to ale dát dohromady, když Humphreyho heslo je „Ať se všichni baví!“, zatímco Kate prosazuje „Já jsem vůdkyně“? Při své dobrodružné cestě se naučí spolupracovat jako tým a – jak jistě brzy uhodnete – se do sebe zamilují. Jak je ale přivítá rozhádaná smečka? Podaří se jim zachránit vlčí rod?

However, he is older and has problems with his vision, and Captain Arseniev invites Dersu Uzala to live with his family in Khabarovsk City. But the old man does not adapt to the urban lifestyle and decides to return to the forest. In 1910, Captain Arseniev is called to Korfovskaia to identify the body of a man who has his calling card and might be Dersu Uzala.

(cz) Príbeh sibírskeho lovca, ktorý sa odohráva na začiatku 20. storočia, bol nakrútený v sibírskych exteriéroch v sovietsko-japonskej koprodukcii podľa literárnej predlohy ruského cestovateľa Vladimíra Arsenieva (Stopár Dersu Uzala a V lesoch ussurijského kraja). Na začiatku filmu prichádza bádateľ na miesto, kde pred tromi rokmi pochoval svojho priateľa a zisťuje, že jeho bezmenný hrob zmizol rovnako, ako neodvratne mizne krása sibírskej tajgy, v ktorej žil. V retrospektíve rozpráva príbeh o stretnutí dvoch svetov - dvoch civilizácií, príbeh o majestátnosti krajiny a priateľstve dvoch mužov, naplnený úctou k prírode. Keď v roku 1902 Arseniev ako ruský vojenský prieskumník viedol expedíciu mapujúcu neprebádané miesta sibírskej tajgy, k ich výprave sa pripojil lovec z kmeňa Goldi menom Dersu Uzala. Nevzdelaný stopár, z ktorého si vojaci spočiatku robili žarty, si všetkých získava svojou múdrosťou, láskou k prírode a nesebeckosťou. Kapitána očaruje i jeho animistická viera, keď Dersu vidí za všetkým živým "ľjudi" a dokáže sa prihovárať nielen zvieratám, ale aj ohňu, či vetru. Ich vzájomné priateľstvo je upevnené mnohými prežitými nebezpečenstvami i tým, keď Uzala zachráni kapitánov život. O tom však nikdy nerozpráva, pretože je to pre neho samozrejmosť. Ich vzájomné životy sa opäť pretnú po rokoch, keď Arseniev vedie väčšiu výpravu. Dersu však vtedy rýchlo stráca zrak a nebol by sa schopný v tajge uživiť. Rus ho preto pozýva k sebe domov do Chabarovska a starnúci Goldi sa stretáva s civilizáciou, ktorej nerozumie.

(en) The Ledge has been called the Brokeback Mountain for atheists, but that's not exactly true. Although there is a conflict between faith and reason, the film is a human drama revolving around tragic stories. Sure, it should be appreciated to offer an intelligent, and arguably likable (and talkative) atheist main character (and it doesn't cheat the viewer on this one) but the film never goes to deep, only presents the common arguments. So some arguments from the atheist side are a bit cliche and their only purpose is to serve the schematic writing. Not only dialogues, such as tender gay housemate of the main character is a stereotypical, and it's there for the homophobic neighbour. Luckily, some humor and small touches do the job well. A fundamentalist as an antagonist makes both main characters too much black and white and makes the plot unrealistic. However the film tells that atheist or not, we all are the victims of our miserable lives and even a non-believer can save the day!

The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he's only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

(de) Der Spielfilm Der Baader Meinhof Komplex aus dem Jahr 2008 schildert Vorgeschichte und Aktionen der Rote Armee Fraktion von 1967 bis 1977 und folgt dabei weitgehend dem gleichnamigen Sachbuch von Stefan Aust. Produzent Bernd Eichinger verfasste das Drehbuch, mit der Regie beauftragte er Uli Edel. Eichingers Dramaturgie verzichtet auf eine identifikatorische Hauptfigur und einen durchgehenden Handlungsbogen. Die Produktion bietet zahlreiche große Namen aus der deutschen Schauspielerriege auf und ist zum Teil bis in Kleinstrollen mit bekannten Darstellern besetzt. Sie verbuchte zweieinhalb Millionen Kinobesuche. Als eine der teuersten deutschsprachigen Produktionen wurde sie von der ARD kofinanziert, die den Film ein Jahr nach der Kinopremiere als längeren Fernsehzweiteiler ausstrahlte. Die Kritik war sich sehr uneinig darüber, ob der Film mitreißt oder unbeteiligt lässt, die RAF-Mitglieder mythisch überhöht und ob er den Debatten zum Thema RAF eine neue Richtung zu geben vermag. Wegen einiger Darstellungen ergingen gerichtliche Klagen gegen die Macher.

V Německu se píše rok 1967. Levicová novinářka Ulrike Meinhofová (Martina Gedeck) je šokovaná zprávami o krvavé demonstraci v Berlíně. Když si uvědomí, že její manželství skončilo, odstěhuje se do německé metropole i se svými dvěma dětmi a začne se aktivně angažovat v protivládním a protikapitalistickém hnutí. Silně na ni zapůsobí čin Gudrun Ensslinové (Johanna Wokalek) a jejího přítele Andrease Baadera (Moritz Bleibtreu) na protest proti vietnamské válce. Baader je zatčen, Meinhofová, která podporuje jeho osvobození, přeruší veškeré vazby s dosavadním životem, opustí své děti a s Baaderem a Ensslinovou založí Odbojovou rudou armádu (RAF - Red Army Fraction). Jejím cílem je vést ozbrojený politický boj všemi prostředky. Po vojenském výcviku v táboru teroristické skupiny Al Fatah v Jordánsku skupina začne přepadat banky, provede několik násilných a vražedných útoků a počet mrtvých rychle narůstá. Šéf německé federální policie Horst Herold (Bruno Ganz) proti nim postaví mimořádně silnou policejní jednotku a v roce 1972 úspěšně zadrží všechny vůdce i další členy skupiny. Politická síla hnutí však přesto prudce roste, do RAF vstupují noví členové, Meinhofová, Baader a Ensslinová se stávají ikonami radikalistického hnutí. Na podzim 1977 však spor mezi RAF a vládou vyvrcholí. Šest týdnů po únosu významného byznysmena skupina unese letadlo s 86 německými turisty na palubě…

(en) Palm oil has become one of the most ubiquitous products around, found in everything from lipstick to margarine and toothpaste. It’s estimated that one in every ten supermarket products contain it, usually described simply as ‘vegetable oil’. Now Palm Oil is being touted as a sustainable alternative to the world’s energy problems. But environmentalists claim palm oil cultivation is contributing to global warming and threatening biodiversity, leading to rivers being polluted and indigenous people being forced from their land. Much of the world’s palm oil comes from plantations in Indonesia. It’s grown on land ‘reclaimed’ from the rainforest, driving animals like orang-utans into extinction.

En 2008, l'Indonésie détient toujours le taux de déforestation le plus fort du monde : l'équivalent d'un terrain de football toutes les 15 secondes. Le feu se charge de nettoyer ce qui reste de foret primaire. Allumés volontairement a la saison seche, ces incendies géants brulent forets et tourbieres pendant des semaines.
Le carbone dégagé par cette gigantesque combustion a fait de l'Indonésie le troisieme pays émetteur de gaz a effets de serre de la planete, apres la Chine et les Etats-Unis. Des palmiers a huile remplacent la perte de l'ancienne foret qui occupait 80% de l'espace. Une monoculture rentable, a perte de vue. Depuis peu, l'huile de palme entre dans la composition du carburant. Une loi, votée par le Parlement européen, impose un taux de 5,75% de biocarburants d'ici 2010 et de 10% d'ici 2020. Conséquence directe de cette loi : l'importation massive d'huile de palme sur notre continent. Une huile beaucoup moins chere que l'huile de colza et produite avec un faible cout de main d'ouvre.
Malaisie et Indonésie, les deux principaux pays producteurs étendent leurs cultures de palmiers a huile sur tout leur territoire. Une ruée vers l'or vert aux conséquences dramatiques : la déforestation massive de la foret vierge, un trésor inestimable pour la biodiversité

(cz) Z palmového oleje se stává stále důležitější komodita a podle odhadů ho v sobě obsahuje každý desátý výrobek na trhu. A zatímco Evropa si na něj pořád zvyká, země jihovýchodní Asie na něm postavily svou ekonomiku. Vedle potravinářského a chemického průmyslu totiž slouží i jako alternativa k fosilním palivům a možná odpověď na hrozící energetickou krizi. Obrovský boom pěstování palmy olejné s sebou ale samozřejmě nese i problémy. Neúměrně zatěžuje životní prostředí a lidé tak stojí před dalším důležitým rozhodnutím.

Italy in the 30s. Tonino, a sad faced, freckled peasant, comes to Rome to kill Mussolini. She introduces him as her cousin, giving him access to the brothel, and she helps him prepare for the assassination, scheduled a few days after his arrival. Within a day, he has fallen in love with Tripolina, one of the younger prostitutes. Tonino does the madam a favor, and, in exchange, Tripolina gets two days off to spend with him. How will this love affair, Salome's political will, and the assassination plans play out?

When the documentary first aired, it was watched by nearly three million people and encouraged hundreds of women who abused in the Asylums (a real hell for children) to reveal themselves. Aside from the film the Magdalene Sisters, which was inspired by the documentary, it's far more shocking to listen to the real victims and realize that how memories of these horrific events haunted them and affected and shattered their later life.
